Imagine lying on your back in a woodland clearing. Its a warm afternoon and looking up through the branches the sky is cloudless and deep blue. As time goes by the leaves change from summer green to the colours of Autumn. This is my new studio painting it’s called ‘Looking up’.
The idea for the painting came to me, as ever, during the execution of a location painting. Its one of a series of paintings based around the idea of doodling and using a single brush shape repeated around the canvas. In this painting the shape of the DNA is a simple branching design. Each iteration of the DNA is a different colour placed pointing to the centre and executed freehand. As the painting progressed the colours built up, overlaid and modulated. The only really conscious decision I made was the overall notion of the colours changing from Summer greens to Autumn yellows and reds.
‘Looking up’ is an oil painting on canvas. Dimensions are 800mm x 800mm.
